Carly Rae Jepsen has spent years turning the dance floor into an emotional setting rather than simply a physical one. On her new single, “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor,” that familiar territory becomes something stranger: a place where romance, embarrassment and loneliness refuse to disappear when the music starts.

Harris-directed video pushes Jepsen’s pop universe into decidedly more cinematic territory, transforming what could have been a conventional dance-pop visual into an eccentric short film about a relationship reaching its breaking point.
Jeremy O. Harris Puts Heartbreak at the Centre
Instead of positioning Jepsen as the obvious protagonist, Harris places actor Alden Ehrenreich at the centre of the story.The video follows a man attempting to salvage a damaged relationship with a woman played by Olivia Washington. After that effort falls apart, the emotional weight shifts into an almost-empty dance hall, where movement becomes his way of processing what has happened. Jepsen appears less like the traditional star of the video and more like an elusive presence within the scene.
It is an unusual choice for a major pop single, especially in an era when music videos are frequently designed around easily clipped performance moments. Harris goes in the opposite direction. Shot on 16mm film, the visual leans into theatrical performance, grainy texture and deliberately awkward emotion. Choreographer Marc Crousillat worked on Ehrenreich’s movement, while Harris cited performance and film influences including the final sequence of Claire Denis’ Beau Travail.
The result feels less interested in making heartbreak look beautiful than in showing how strange people can become when they are trying to hold onto something that has already changed.

That approach fits Jepsen better than it initially might seem. Her reputation has been built on precision pop songwriting, but the emotional tension inside those songs has always been more complicated than their bright surfaces suggest. Harris told Vulture that Jepsen was comfortable with the possibility of barely appearing in the video, a surprisingly generous creative decision for the person whose name is technically at the top of the release.
‘Day and Night’ Is Starting to Take Shape
The single also makes the larger album concept easier to read. Universal Music Canada describes Day and Night as a 24-track double album built around a blurred sense of time, where days drift into nights and the distinction between the two becomes increasingly unstable. It is scheduled for September 18.
“On Wires” introduced the campaign in June, while July’s “After All” offered a warmer, more reflective perspective. “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor” now pulls the project toward nightlife, but without treating nighttime as uncomplicated escape. That may be the most compelling part of the rollout so far.
The dance floor in Jepsen’s music has often represented possibility — the moment before someone leaves, stays, kisses, calls or changes their mind. Here, it becomes the place where someone has to confront what happens when those possibilities start disappearing. For a Canadian pop artist who has spent more than a decade proving that emotional specificity can coexist with enormous hooks, it feels like familiar ground seen through a distorted mirror. And with Day and Night still more than a month away, Jepsen is making the space around the album increasingly difficult to predict.
To conclude, “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor” works because Carly Rae Jepsen does not treat the music video as a simple extension of the single. By handing the concept to Jeremy O. Harris and allowing another character to carry much of its emotional weight, she turns a pop release into something more theatrical, uncomfortable and memorable. It also makes Day and Night look increasingly ambitious ahead of its September 18 release.
