Julia Gartha Gets Honest on California’s Killing Me Focus Track “Not In The Room”

Distance has a funny way of making people poetic when showing up would have been easier. Julia Gartha gets straight into that contradiction on “Not In The Room,” the focus track from her latest EP California’s Killing Me. The American artist builds the alt-pop cut around prominent, slightly reverbed drums that give the record a loose knock, while soulful guitar riffs and smooth bass keep the groove warm underneath. Distant synths sit further back in the frame, adding atmosphere without stealing attention from Gartha’s sultry, slightly raspy vocal. Her delivery is where the song really breathes. There is yearning in it, but also irritation—a controlled tension between still wanting someone and being tired of surviving on scraps. Subtle harmonies widen certain phrases without polishing away that frustration. The production stays laidback, yet the drum work gives it just enough bounce to stop the emotion from sinking into slow-motion heartbreak.

“Not In The Room” cuts deepest in the space between absence and effort. Gartha examines a long-distance relationship where affection suddenly becomes abundant only when she is halfway across the world, while proximity seems to bring the bare minimum. That imbalance gives the title its sting. If someone misses you so intensely when you are gone, why does that love become harder to locate when you are actually there? Gartha does not overcomplicate the question, and that directness works. Her vocal tone carries enough wear to make the uncertainty feel lived rather than manufactured, while the guitars and roomy drums keep the track conversational and mobile. There is no huge production trick needed because the emotional contradiction already provides the tension. As part of California’s Killing Me, “Not In The Room” feels like a clean snapshot of emotional inconsistency: soulful, quietly frustrated, and sharp enough to expose the difference between saying you miss someone and actually knowing how to hold them close.
