Guelph, Canada Band SHEBAD Explores Endurance on “Entropy”
SHEBAD’s “Entropy” converts physical instability into disciplined musical motion. The Guelph-based Canadian band frames Claire Voy’s experience with endometriosis through syncopated glassy riffs, a soulful bassline, and upbeat drums that refuse to let the song collapse under its subject. Voy’s velvety, yearning vocal carries the emotional center, while layered harmonies introduce a communal quality that fits SHEBAD’s broader soul, jazz, fusion, and funk vocabulary. The arrangement is precise rather than crowded. Bass provides gravity. Drums create momentum. The brighter melodic details keep tension active without making the production feel artificially optimistic. That contrast is important. “Entropy” comes from Voy’s decade-long experience of living with chronic illness, yet the band avoids presenting pain as static tragedy. Instead, the track moves, bends, and keeps reorganizing itself around the pressure at its core.
The writing is equally controlled. Voy describes a body seemingly deteriorating from within while still being required to function, work, wake up, and continue. The recurring command to get up and face the day becomes less motivational than mechanical, illustrating how survival can turn into routine. Elsewhere, images of becoming untethered and struggling to hold up a temple give the illness both psychological and architectural dimensions. A dream of floating through a painless galaxy provides temporary release before the song returns to physical reality. That shift is effective because it clarifies the central conflict: escape exists mainly in imagination, while endurance happens repeatedly and imperfectly. SHEBAD never reduces chronic illness to either defeat or inspirational triumph. “Entropy” leaves room for anger, exhaustion, resilience, fear, and resistance to coexist. Its groove-forward construction strengthens that complexity, making the track feel physically alive even when the lyrics describe a body under siege. The result is focused alternative R&B with emotional weight and structural intelligence.
