American Electronic Duo UNTER STRØM Explore Dark Club Architecture on “Between Forms”
UNTER STRØM’s latest EP project Between Forms breathes as a compact but forceful architectural statement from the Los Angeles and San Diego electronic duo, pairing industrial shadow with melodic precision. Built by Alex Gonzales of Matte Blvck and John Kunkel of The New Division and John Grand, the project carries the imprint of two producers already fluent in dark electronic language, but here their shared vocabulary becomes heavier, more cinematic, and more physically charged. Across four tracks, Between Forms moves through EDM, electronica, techno pressure, and a faint current of future bass, sculpting high-energy drums, syncopated synths, strings, dark bass weight, and upbeat rhythmic motion into a structure that feels both engineered and volatile. “Orynth” opens the EP with scale and definition, its time-stretched atmospheres and driving rhythmic frame creating a dramatic threshold into the duo’s world. The track’s polish never softens its tension; instead, it allows the cinematic details to widen around the beat like steel beams under black light. “Fold” then narrows the room, pushing into hypnotic low-end pressure, mechanical percussion, and minimalist techno restraint. It is less about explosion than controlled compression, a study in how darkness can move without wasting a gesture.
The second half shows why UNTER STRØM’s emergence feels less like a side project and more like a fully formed design system. “Fragment,” written together at Los Angeles’ Sound Factory, has the restless intelligence of a piece that refuses to obey a static floor plan. Sections appear, mutate, and recede, giving the track an evolving body rather than a predictable loop-based skeleton. Its power comes from motion, from the sense of two artists trading instinct in real time until the composition becomes larger than its original frame. “Stumbling,” the final piece, opens the EP’s emotional ceiling. Shifting arpeggios, submerged textures, and evolving rhythms create a landscape of rain, air, and distance, yet the pulse remains tethered to the dance floor. That duality is the EP’s central achievement: Between Forms can function in a dark club, inside headphones, or as the blueprint for a future live transformation. UNTER STRØM do not merely stack intensity and melody; they design pressure, space, and release with curatorial control.
